Task: Answer the question: What media do I use? How does it affect me and the world I live in?
I have a blackberry curve, a 3rd generation phone which I use throughout the day for music, facebook, internet and most importantly for communication which I use blackberry messenger as the majority of the time. If I upgraded my phone, I would stick with a Blackberry, but I would upgrade to the top of the range Blackberry Torch because it uses new technology and small details that have been improved compared to my Blackberry Curve. To keep in touch with my friends, I use Facebook and Blackberry messenger. With Facebook it is an easy, free way to communicate with friends. Blackberry messenger is exclusively for Blackberry phones and with a large number of my friends owning blackberry’s instant messaging between each other is very simple. I am not too concerned with the privacy issues on Facebook because there is nothing that is published my page that will affect me or anyone else. If I want to see a film, I tend to buy the film from an HMV store because the prices of DVD’s are relatively cheap now. But I will only buy a film if someone has recommended it to me or I have heard good reviews about it. Otherwise I occasionally record films that might be worth watching on TV. I don’t regularly go to the cinema but I would go if a new movie released is a big blockbuster and is recommended by a number of friends. If I was going to visit the cinema I would book the cinema tickets online because it is quick, easy and efficient.
Music is very important in my life and I tend to listen to music on my Ipod, laptop when I have spare time and I also listen to the radio when I am in the car. I pay for music using iTunes now but I used to use a cheap priced illegal website which allowed me download music on a regular basis; but now the price of iTunes restricts me and I can’t download as much as I used to now. However I use Spotify almost whenever I’m using my laptop because it has a huge library to access which is all free (providing I have internet access).
I like playing video games and I own an Xbox 360 which I play daily. I am subscribed to Xbox Live which allows me to play games with my friends online against each other. Xbox also gives you access to videos, facebook, twitter and free demos so that you can try out a game before you buy it.
I use the internet for 3 hours on average daily. I use the internet for social networking, shopping, news, games and videos. The internet seems to be my main resource for almost anything and it is the centre of media now. My family uses the internet for similar uses that I do. My Dad regularly uses the internet for shopping and for example he is able to do most of his Christmas shopping online from home rather than facing the prospect of spending hours on end in the Bentalls buying all the Christmas presents. I experience various problems with the internet but the biggest risk faced by the internet is losing your credit card details or getting a virus on your computer.
I would go online to read news providing its free otherwise on the weekends, I read the Saturday and Sunday newspaper but usually only the sport and TV guide.
On TV I tend to watch sitcoms on e4 in my spare time. If I want to watch something that I have missed I will most likely catch up on either BBC IPlayer or 4od usually, but if I have missed a whole series I will go buy the series on DVD if it is strongly recommended by a friend.
In the future, what I think would be useful technology would be walking into a video game making everything seem so realistic in a video game.
